Colven stewart
'Ezo-Russe' Wild Deer leatherhokkaido, japan

Government-mandated wildlife management culls designed to protect forestry ecosystems across Japan generate massive organic waste. A large amount of wild deer skins are designated for thermal incineration or left to decompose.Colven Stewart exists to restore purpose to a discarded ecological material. From wild forest retrieval to vegetable tannage and hand-curried wax finishing, we honor the life of the animal by creating an enduring heritage leather.
Primary Tannage
zero-chromium
The wild Hokkaido deer skins undergo a 100% heavy-metal-free vegetable tannage using concentrated Mimosa and Acacia tree bark extracts. This protects the supple collagen structure, resulting in a leather that preserves the animal's natural grain. It establishes the ideal open pore foundation for Colven Stewart’s hand-waxed currying finish.

secondary currying
'Ezo-russe'
Secondary currying takes place in our Sapporo workshop where we transform the vegetable-tanned deer leather into Ezo-Russe. Each hide is individually hot-stuffed by hand to saturate the internal fibers, increase structural resilience and impart water repellency. Our formulation relies exclusively on unrefined, domestically harvested ingredients:

TARExtracted directly from the bark of fallen birch trees in the forests of Hokkaido. Rich in natural phenolic compounds, it provides organic water resistance, anti-fungal protection, and the smoky aroma of traditional Russia leather.

WAXA dual formulation combining raw beeswax with pure Rice Bran Wax. Beeswax locks internal oils, preventing migration, while Rice Bran Wax forms a high-temp crystalline shield for a dry, non-tacky hand-feel.

TALLOWRendered in-house from winter Ezo deer fat reserves. A high-stearic lipid that deeply saturates the open corium matrix, feeding the collagen fibers to establish structural density, resilience, and flex.
